Sympathetic Horror
07:26
|
|||
"From this bizarre and livid sky,
Tormented like your doom and mine,
On your void spirit passing by,
What thoughts descend, O libertine ?"
—Athirst for mortal things unsung
In shadowy realms of lone surmise,
I will not whine like Ovid, flung
From out the Latin paradise.
Skies torn like strands of ocean-streams,
In you is mirrored all my pride!
Your slow, enormous clouds abide
The dolent hearses of my dreams;
Your glimmers mock with fluctuant lights
The hell wherein my heart delights.

The Abyss Triumphant
09:21
|
|||
The force of suns had waned beyond recall.
Chaos was re-established over all,
Where lifeless atoms through forgetful deeps
Fled unrelated, cold, immusical.
Above the tumult heaven alone endured;
Long since the bursting walls of hell had poured
Demon and damned to peace erstwhile denied,
Within the Abyss God's might had not immured.
(He could but thwart it with creative mace. . . .)
And now it rose about the heavenly Base,
Mordant at pillars rotten through and through
Of Matter's last, most firm abiding-place.
Bastion and minaret began to nod,
Till all the pile, unmindful of His rod,
Dissolved in thunder, and the void Abyss
Caught like a quicksand at the feet of God !

The Tartarus of the Suns
10:01
|
|||
Beyond the orbit of the farthest sun,
A desert darkness lies — immeasured night
That knows nor eve nor dawn, where only drift
Dethroned and aimless suns, and worlds unlit.
Thereto are cast the disenabled stars,
Like those great Titans that high Zeus hurled,
By will supreme, from the Olympian peak
To Tartarus, the nadir of all space.
Discarded dust and cinders of the Plan,
Darkened and chill, they haunt the silent gloom,
And wait their brothers, suns that reign afar;
Till these shall come, with all their subject worlds,
Whose dust hath dreamed of Immortality,
And Night succeed unto their flaming thrones.

The Wingless Archangels
08:14
|
|||
Beyond the bourn of dreams, their fortunate sphere,
Golden and large in some rich galaxy,
Rolls upon ways prolonged of harmony;
And they, with wingless toil of many a year,
Unto the calm of heavens have clomb anear—
Wise with the secrets of eternity,
And forcing truce with time. . . . They deem them free
From change, and from the old, unchanging fear.
But on their immortality is blight—
Whose dream betraying deserts have undone:
They turn, where winds make chill the ashen light,
Blown as from space and bleak oblivion;
And mark the dim, portentous breath of Night,
A mist penumbral on the noontide sun.

The Soul of the Sea
06:56
|
|||
A wind comes in from the sea,
And rolls through the hollow dark
Like loud, tempestuous waters.
As the swift recurrent tide,
It pours adown the sky,
And rears at the cliffs of night
Uppiled against the vast.
Like the soul of the sea—
Hungry, unsatisfied
With ravin of shores and of ships—
Come forth on the land to seek
New prey of tideless coasts,
It raves, made hoarse with desire,
And the sounds of the night are dumb
With the sound of its passing
